Tobey Maguire

An astrologer's nightmare: a public prediction of success is followed by what appears to be career disaster.
He can spin a web, any size, and catches thieves just like flies. But the arsenal of secret powers celebrated by Spider-Man’s famous theme tune is next-to-useless when it comes to negotiating the choppy waters of Hollywood studio politics.
Tobey Maguire, the actor who has played the super-hero throughout his extraordinarily-lucrative modern incarnation, has decided to hang up his spandex suit, just weeks before filming on a fourth instalment of the franchise was due to commence.
Also quitting, in the fallout from what appears to be an epic creative dispute, are Sam Raimi, the director behind all three of the recent Spider-Man films, and Kirsten Dunst, who plays Mary Jane Watson, love interest of the web-throwing crime fighter’s alter ego, Peter Parker.
Today, however, comes a different story:

American actor Tobey Maguire will star in The Hobbit after quitting the Spider-Man franchise.
The Sun reported Maguire, 34, will play the lead role of Bilbo Baggins in the blockbuster movie version of JRR Tolkien's classic book.

The news follows his decision to quit the Spider-Man franchise after three films.

Maguire was said to be unhappy with the direction the fourth Spider-Man movie is set to take.

The Hobbit producer Peter Jackson - who was also behind the epic Lord Of The Rings trilogy - and director Guillermo del Toro have been after him for months.

I am spared public embarrassment... this time.

UPDATE, July 30, 2010: With the fate of the Hobbit films tied to the potential bankruptcy of MGM and with Ian McKellen looking for other work, this will be a very interesting prediction to test in the coming months. Success for Maguire, let us remember, need not be tied to this particular film.  But it should come within the prescribed period.
